Shoot<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>27 February 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veteran Mark Direen is behind an annual veteran photography exhibition called&nbsp;<em>Point &amp; Shoot<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Showcasing career imagery and accompanying stories from Australian veterans, this exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the life and experiences of fellow Australians who have served their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Point &amp; Shoot: Australian Veteran Photography\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6i9Hz3dCArQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Covering military service from post the Second World War onwards,&nbsp;<em>Point &amp; Shoot&nbsp;<\/em>commemorates a range of modern conflicts, peace operations and service.&nbsp;In 2022, the exhibition featured 60 veteran images taken within Australia or on overseas operations, with all images cleared by Defence media and approved for public display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of the exhibition is not to display perfectly captured photos from professional photographers. Rather, it\u2019s to share some of those moments frozen in time that those who serve our nation thought were worth remembering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark served in the Army for 16 years, ten of them in the Special Air Service Regiment. His interest in photography arose when he undertook photographic reconnaissance work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018When the situation allowed, I\u2019d quite often find myself capturing a photo, just to remember the moment,\u2019 he says in DVA TV\u2019s latest video. \u2018Later, I\u2019d reflect on the photos and the stories that sat behind them. And I thought, I bet other veterans have photos from their deployments. I\u2019d love to see them, I\u2019d love to hear their stories, and I\u2019d love to share them.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018I think it\u2019s fantastic,\u2019 says Repatriation Commissioner Don Spinks AM. \u2018The opportunity to come together, to remember and talk through stories. They have similar lived experience and it\u2019s really important for veterans to join in activities like this.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018I would encourage any veteran to consider submitting their photos,\u2019 says DVA acting Deputy Secretary Stuart Smith AO DSC. \u2018You might not at first think the story behind the image is worth telling, or that it\u2019s commonplace, but the fact is that if that photo was taken on active service, there\u2019s almost definitely something remarkable about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The exhibition was supported by a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dva.gov.au\/about-us\/overview\/consultations-and-grants\/grants-and-bursaries\/saluting-their-service\">Saluting Their Service grant<\/a>&nbsp;provided by DVA, which seeks to preserve Australia\u2019s wartime heritage and highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia\u2019s servicemen and women.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Point &amp; Shoot is open to all Australian veterans. An Australian veteran is defined as a person who has served in the Australian Defence Force for at least one day in either a regular or reserve capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event also encourages the commemoration of veterans no longer here.
